THE HISTORY OF THE ANTINORI WINERY

THE Marchesi Antinori they are one of the most important families in the world in the wine sector. If not the most important. It is the third oldest family business in the wine sector. Just think that the Antinori winery was founded in 1385 and today after 26 generations it is still in the hands of the same family. It was not bought by international groups, it did not merge with other companies. Indeed it has become a group by acquiring other Tuscan wineries and beyond and creating a real industrial giant, with its 23 million bottles produced and sold all over the world. And we are talking about fine wines of the highest quality.

Around 1500 the Antinori family began exporting its wines to Europe with great success. To the Marchesi Antinori we owe in large part the fame of Tuscan wines and the Sangiovese grape. Born in the current Chianti Classico area, over the years it has bought estates all over Tuscany, but also in other regions such as Umbria and Lombardy in Franciacorta. As a group it has also initiated, in recent years, a series of acquisitions of wineries or wineries already underway around Italy. Below you will discover all the estates and wines of the Antinori winery that you can buy in our wine shop.
ANTINORI IN THE CHIANTI CLASSICO
The birthplace of the Antinori marquises is the current Chianti Classico. It all started from here. Today the winery represents an architectural marvel perfectly set among the Chianti vineyards. Here is the historic site of Antinori, which was renovated in 2012 and now also houses a museum and a restaurant. Other estates are owned by the family in this area: Badia a Passignano and Tenuta Pèppoli.

ESTATE TIGNANELLO ANTINORI
Here we are in front of the most prestigious estate of the winery, not for the structure but for the quality of the vineyards: exposure, soil and temperature variations give life to the most iconic Antinori wines: Tignanello and Solaia. The first born in the 70s was the first Sangiovese to refine in barrique and, following what was happening in Bolgheri in those years, vinified with other international vines such as Cabernet. Solaia, born a few years later, is today one of the most expensive Italian wines and obviously one of the most valuable.

ANTINORI WINES - TENUTA GUADO AL RATE
Around the 1930s the family inherited the Guado al Tasso estate in Bolgheri. Fifty years later that territory lights up with a new light and incredible wines begin to be born. Around the 90s the family began to produce wine sensing that something special was being born in those parts. And so it was. Today Bolgheri is considered one of the most important areas in the world of wine.

ANTINORI WINES - PIAN DELLE VIGNE
And Montalcino? Could a family as important as the Marquises Antinori and moreover Tuscany not have an estate in Montalcino? In 1995 they bought the Pian delle Vigne company and started producing Brunello di Montalcino with their personal style that has always distinguished them.

ANTINORI - CASTLE OF THE SALA
In 1940 Niccolò Antinori became the owner of an estate in Umbria on the border with Tuscany, the Castello della Sala. Formerly owned by the family but then passed into the hands of the Church. Here it was understood that the area's vocation for the production of white wines, which had remained marginal until then, could give the estate a new luster. So between the '70s and' 80s together with a young Enzo Cotarella they begin to grow Chardonnay and Grechetto, and the use of barrique for whites is experimented. This is how the white Antinori wines and the legendary Cervaro della Sala were born.

ANTINORI IN FRANCIACORTA - ESTATE MONTENISA
In 1999 Antinori bought a winery in Franciacorta: Tenuta Montenisa and also began producing Franciacorta sparkling wines with the name Marchese Antinori on the label. This acquisition represents that strategy of acquisitions of the group whose mission is to be able to be present in all the most prestigious areas of Italy with the production of wines of the highest quality.
