Bolgheri Doc

In this area, white, rosé and very great red wines are produced, which have made it famous all over the world. In 2013 the Sassicaia sub-zone was separated into an independent DOC. History We have evidence of the production of wine in the territory of Castagneto Carducci both in the Etruscan and Roman times. The name "Bolgheri" derives from a military settlement of Bulgarians allies of the Lombards, now known as Castello di Bolgheri. Geographical area of production It is possible to produce Bolgheri DOC wines exclusively in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci in the center of the Maremma Livornese, with the exception of the sub-area specified in the DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia. Soil composition The soils in Bolgheri are varied: + alluvial of fluvial origin, with large round stones deposited by ancient watercourses now dry. + clayey, clayey-sandy or sandy soils near the sea. Location Hilly area between 250 and 400 m asl. with the Tyrrhenian Sea to the West. The microclimate of Bolgheri is strongly influenced by the sea which mitigates the climate allowing a slow and regular ripening of the grapes.
