Merlot

The Merlot grape from the south-west of France, in particular from Gironde, gives life to some of the most renowned wines in the world. Merlot, a black grape variety, is often combined with Cabernet Sauvignon since together they give rise to perfectly balanced wines: while the former provides its body, the latter gives elegance and longevity to the wines. In some areas of Bordeaux, on the other hand, Cabernet Franc is added to Merlot which gives the wines a fruity aftertaste and a herbaceous flavor. In Italy Merlot spread in 1800 starting from Friuli Venezia Giulia up to Trentino Alto Adige where it thrived thanks to favorable environmental conditions. Merlot is distinguished by medium-sized leaves with a pentagonal or trilobate shape, while the cluster which is medium compact has a pyramidal shape. The berries of the Merlot grape have a spherical shape, of medium size and are quite pruinose with a black-blue color.
