Today the production of wine has a great weight in the regional economy and there are many efforts to give impetus and modernization to a qualitative potential not yet fully expressed. Compared to some time ago, when Abruzzo was above all a large reservoir of musts and blending wines, things have changed, thanks to some producers who brought some wines obtained from montepulciano and trebbiano, the two vines that dominate the vineyard Abruzzo, to compete with the best Italian products. Elegant and concentrated, rich in aromas and structured, they have nothing to do with the products that were once exported to many northern regions only to enrich the sugar content or alcoholic strength of musts and wines. From a quantitative point of view, the region remains at excellent levels, with about 2.652.000 hl of wine produced in 2009. The wines with Designation of Origin are found in the areas of the plateaus of the Peligna valley, the eastern side of the Gran Sasso and the Teramo hills. , where the Montepulciano, a red grape variety that covers almost half of the Abruzzo vineyard, the Tuscan Trebbiano and the Abruzzese Trebbiano, very close to the Bombino Bianco, have found the best environment to express their qualities.
